"Johnny" Apple was one-of-kind.
During the Scoop Jackson primaries of 1972, I travelled with him several times, in the company of Theordore H. White and Daniel P. Moynihan. Wow ! The stories and yarns flew around and around --- history, politics, geo-politics, jokes. Mostly accurate, I'd guess.
He was a very good writer, and a quite a gourmand.
