Lieberman + the Democrats + the Palestinians
It looks as if Sen. Joe Lieberman will go down in the Democratic Primary this week to Ned Lamont, the scion of a super-wealthy family from Greenwich CT --- once a bastion of keeping most everyone out except WASPS. It has 5-acre zoning!
Lamont doesn't know much about national politics and is keying his race to the unpopularity of the Iraq war.
We shall see about that. I happen to think President Bush did the right thing, with the approval of Congress, with monies continually appropriated from that Congress.
Lieberman has supported the war in general but not on many specifics. He has a solidly moderate/liberal voting record. I've known him since he was a teenage phenom in Stamford CT. He's quite a guy.
What's the message? It's said that the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Democrats and many others in America don't like the war in Iraq.
But Americans are proud people and they have a lot to be proud of. They don't want to see us "cut and run" and not "support the troops."
That's the image a Lamont victory would present.
Once again the Democrats will be seen as the gutless party , missing an opportunity.
As Jeane Kirkpatrick famously said at the 1984 GOP convention in San Francisco, too many Democrats "Blame America First."
The Republicans swept the board that year.
Don't count on big Democratic gains this Fall.
