The First Universal Language ?
When I was young (I still feel young) there was a competition as to which language would be most potent. French was the language of the arts; German the language of science.
There was an attempt for a universal language called "Esperanto." It flopped.
Come now the idea of "Globish," a short simple version of English. It's not very inspiring.
But English has the largest vocabulary and between the Brits and the Americans we've introduced to most all corners of the world.
One more example of "American Exceptionalism."
Best,
Ben
