"Some Cutting Remarks"

A critical skill in making movies or television shows is that of the film editor. In Some Cutting Remarks Ralph E Winters tells his story very straight-forwardly.

I gave the book to all my television associates. They still tell me about it.

He won a number of Academy Awards for film editing, including for Ben-Hur, with it's classic chariot-racing scene. Other works included King Solomon's Mines, and Victor/Victoria

He was the son of tailor. After all, film in those those days was cut, not edited electronically. It's more expensive and more time-consuming than electronic editing, but the product --- snip-snip-snip, cut-with-a-razor for the rough cut --- is better.

He worked with the great directors, including Billy Wilder, who would shoot very few takes because he knew just what the film editor would need.

I came to know Ralph through a good friend of mine in Southern Califorrnia. He was quiet, modest, unassuming --- and proud of his work and his Oscars. He loved his work well into old age, a blessing indeed.

He traveled all over the world, often with his wife, sometimes with his children.

He and they learned languages, and about cultures in many climes.

He died when he over 90, having lived a full life.

Ben

PS. A later post to kum on movie and TV music --- also a great art form.
