It is mostly true that the Democrats are usually the tax-and-spend party, sometimes for good programs, sometimes for dumb ones.

But President George W. Bush is no slouch at that. He has infuriated some conservatives. But most of his costly programs --- in this very, very wealthy nation --- are not bad at all.

No Child Left Behind
is burdened with a ridiculous title, but generally makes sense. In America, every child that wants an education should be able to get one --- and most such do.

In an era when drugs can save lives, no one should be denied medical care --- and most do get such care.

No old person should have to scavenge through garbage cans for food --- and few do.

We can make the system better --- we finally dumped the old welfare program, because it engendered bad behavior. Now, poor people who need help get more than before, and the chislers and cheats get less.
