Words, Words, Words

Words can be swords.

I am reading Robert MacNiel's wonderful The Story of English (with co-authors.)

Katie Couric just began her much-noted run as Anchor Woman on CBS. (In the UK they routinely are called "news-readers.")

She is routinely called "perky," in Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language.

That is defined as "brisk, gay, saucy, jaunty, spirited, aggressive."

Pretty good.

But supposed she were called "hyper" --- no definition in Webster's.

That's another story, isn't it?

Words have shadings. Don't shade the truth.

Whatever. From your non-shady poster boy,

Ben
