I think Sen. Clinton is a tough-minded, intelligent woman with her eye on the main chance. That's good, not bad.

But why is Rudy leading her in early 2008 horse-race results?

Many of the old verities still hold sway, even those derogated as "Wedge Issues."

"Crime in the streets" is still probably the biggest one. It's not a "codeword for racism" as was said.

It's a code-phrase for a civilized society.

Rudy seems to embody that.
