John was a colleague of mine at AEI.
He is an experienced and able man --- in many fields.
After he achieved fame by checking "chads" with a magnifying glass in late 1999, Vice-President-elect Dick Cheney (then an AEI trustee) addressed the possibility of John getting a job in the new administration saying "John, before you ask, the answer is 'anything you want' "
(Hyperbole...)
Daniel P. Moynihan and Jeane J. Kirkpatrick were also condemned by the press for breaking the crockery at the moribund and mean-spirited U.N. (Is it getting any better?)
Both acheived enormous national popularity. Both were asked to run for for President.
