Rachel Carson --- preistess or pestess..

Rachel Carson is an eco-icon. Here is how one encylopedia desribes her most important work:

Silent Spring (1962) called public attention to the wasteful and destructive use of pesticides.
Carson warned that pesticides poison the food supply of animals and kill many birds and fish. She pointed out that pesticides could also contaminate human food supplies. Her arguments helped lead to restrictions on the use of pesticides in many parts of the world.

Well. It was DDT that was so effectively used to cure malaria. But the goody-two-shoes banned it. And most of the poor countries of the world (not wanting to antagonize their funders) went along.

Used properly it is not harmful.

Result: More than a million deaths each year.

Of course, these deaths most typically occur in poor counries. Such results are give little attention.
