Well... well... welll...
"Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, running as an independent, has a big lead over Democrat Ned Lamont."
--- From a recent poll ---+ + +
Senator Lieberman will "organize" as a Democrat, but he shouldn't do that unless he retains the Committee and Sub-commitee slots he now holds.
In any event I suspect that he will more free than ever to vote his conscience.
When I was about 26, and Joe was about 16, I used watch him tune his skills in politcal oratory at Cummings Park in Stamford CT. The old Jews in the back of the crowd, would whisper one to another: "Some day that boy is going to be President. "
It could still happen.
Third Party races are not so unusual in American political history. Abraham Lincoln was either a third or fourth party candidate in 1860. Ross Perot was solidly ahead in 1992 before he went nutso, and still finished with 19%. George Wallace was running only a single point behind Hubert Humphrey in 1972; Wallace carried Michigan and Cambridge Mass !!!
Some combination of Sen. Joe with, say, Sen. John McCain and "America's Mayor" Rudy Giuliani could clean up. (I like them both.) JL would be in the second spot or at the head of such a ticket. If he is VP, one those fellows could die. (They have each had serious illnesses.) That, too --- or incapacitation --- has happened more than we like to think about.
It is not an impossible dream, only unlikely.
But if you think you can tell me who the next President will be, you are wrong.
Period. Full stop.
Ben
I could happen.

"I could happen"? You mean, you could happen? As in, Mr. President-Elect Ben Wattenberg?
