Sen. Chafee is not my favorite.
It is said that "there is no center" remaining in American politics.
By definition that is wrong. Arrayed along a spectrum, there is always a center.
As Richard M. Scammon and I wrote in The Real Majority in 1970, the real swing vote in American legislatures is in the the middle. More than 35 years later --- astonishingly --- TRM is still cited with approval. Joe Klein's new book did so three times ( !)
The Middle Legislator casts the vote that makes a majority.
He/she is very important.
