Pseudo-events
The late (and great) American historian Daniel Boorstin coined the the term "pseudo-event." (I think.) The Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was then engaged in "shuttle diplomacy" between Israel and Egypt. Each day there was a big story, reviewing all the previous developments --- and nothing much was happening.
I find that usually if just read the headline of a story --- and have some backround knowledge of it --- that's fine.
