I have seen ratings charts at CNN --- once a good cable network --- proudly display a viewership chart with a huge "spike" in it.

Why? Because a little girl was trapped in a well.

Meanwhile there was a Cold War going on, the economy was booming or busting, more people than ever before owned their own cars, air conditioners, telephones, computers, and television sets.

Aphorism: The media don't get the story wrong. They get the wrong story.
