"Costco" "Walmart" "Target"

I just returned from a visit to Costco with one of my children.

The prices are sooo cheap; the quantities so large. When you consider transportation, salaries, manufacturing --- it seems impossible. Perhaps they have "loss leaders."

No question: It is a retailing revolution of benefit to all who take advantage of it. It helps make poor people --- less-poor.

Jackie Kennedy used to shop at The Gap.

Other people (perhaps Jackie too) pay thousands of dollars for a frock.

Yes, fine. But don't you care about the far-reaching effects of these super stores? First they put hundreds of small-town Main Streets out of business. Now they treat their employees like dirt. You have to look further than your own pocket book when thinking of the so-called economic benefits of these places.
