Ghandi --- he understood how the media works...

I am watching Ghandi on that incredible new device the DVD (Denon) screed. It is a wonderful movie, starring Ben Kingsley.

Thanks to the historical research that goes into such period pieces, a viewer can learn a great deal about earliers times: bows and arrows, early steam engines, herds of elephants used as weapons, the early airplanes etc.

Mahatma Ghandi was loved and/or reviled in his time.

But he understood how the media worked.

In South Africa, leading strikes by the (substantial) Indian population, he told his near-frenzied supporters to delay their demonstration. Why?

The English press corps was on their way from Cape Town. Their trainn was delayed.

The purpose of the demonstrations were to play on the conscience of the Brits back home.

They did.

Ever thus, most everywhere. The Palestinians, the Israelis, the Cubans, the Americans, the Corsicans, the Venezualans, the Basques, and more.

That was long before the 500-channel information super-highway.
